Orthodontic Emergencies
What to do?
Direct injuries to the mouth or teeth
1. Contact your family dentist first - If a tooth has been knocked out, or severely displaced, your family
dentist will have the necessary materials needed to treat these injuries.
2. Please call our office immediately after seeing your family dentist. If you cannot reach your family
dentist, we will help in getting in touch with him/her.
Orthodontic appliance emergencies
If you need our assistance outside business hours call our office and our answering machine
will give you the phone number of the doctors. Meanwhile the following are helpful hints to
remedy some of the problems you may encounter until you can be seen in our office.
Emergency Guidelines:
1. If a rubber spacer falls out---
You can floss the spacer back in yourself by using two pieces of floss to
stretch the spacer and floss back between your teeth.
2. Poking wire---
Push the wire in with an eraser end or a Q-tip. You can also cover the wire with wax or sugarless gum.
If this doesn’t work cut the wire with a nail clipper behind the last tooth to which it is securely fastened.
Call the office to schedule an appointment so the wire can be replaced.
If the main wire has come out of the tube on the back molar tooth, you may attempt to reinsert the wire
with a pair of needle nosed pliers or tweezers. Cutting the wire should only be done as a last resort.
3. Loose Brackets
Call the office to inform us of your loose bracket so we allow for more time in your regular appointment
or schedule ahead of your regular appointment to replace the bracket.
4. Loose Band (the rings around your back teeth)
Please call our office to schedule a time to recement the band.
5. Soreness
Use warm salt-water rinses and/or whatever pain reliever you might use for headache pain.
