HEADGEAR TREATMENT
What is Headgear and why am I wearing it?
Headgear is used in cases where the upper teeth or jaw are too far forward. The headgear slows the upper
jaw in its forward growth and allows the lower jaw to “catch up”.
Headgear Tips
1. Wear the headgear for 12 or more hours per day! Or as you have been instructed.
2. Some temporary discomfort may be experienced during the first couple of nights or weeks. Do not
get overwhelmed! Work up to 12 hours over a 2-3 week period. Once you feel comfortable wearing
the headgear 12 hours or more, wear should be every night. The duration of headgear should be 6
months or less if you follow the instructions of 12-hour wear/night. Lets wear the headgear as directed
and move on. Dr. Hamer and Husson would not ask you to wear the headgear unless they felt it was
absolutely necessary. It is your future smile we are interested in.
3. Headgear treatment has been around for almost as long as orthodontics. Parents may wonder if there
is any new technology besides headgear which their child may use. The answer is yes, however none yet that
have the same effect on the growth of the upper jaw. Headgear, if worn appropriately, is still the most
reliable and best way of treating the upper jaw when it is too far forward.
