The Orthodontic Practice Of
|

What is orthodontics?
Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry, which corrects malocclusions or bad bites. An orthodontist is a
dentist who received advanced training in orthodontics and practices this exclusively. The goal
of an orthodontist is to provide the patient with a balanced, stable, well-functioning bite with upper
and lower teeth meshing together like gears. This type of bite lessons the amount of unwanted
wear on the teeth and reduces the amount of negative pressure which could be placed on the jaw
joints (TMJ's temporo mandibular joints).
Orthodontists are best known for using braces to straighten teeth to give the patient a
better appearance. When a person is proud of their smile, they use it! There is strong
relationship between a person’s smile and their self-image or self-esteem. Giving a
patient a pretty smile with good facial balance and harmony can have a very positive
impact on their life and successes.
Straightening crooked, overlapped teeth can, in many cases, help the patient to better
be able to care for their teeth. In some cases, it can lessen the progression of periodontal
disease. Closing spaces can eliminate areas of food impaction.
So, in addition to improving the way a person’s teeth look, an orthodontist is also dedicated
to improving the overall health of the teeth and their supporting structures (bones, joints, and gum tissue).
