The Myths and Facts About Orthodontic Treatment

myths factsThe American Association of Orthodontics (AAO) make it their mission to educate the public about the benefits of orthodontic treatment. The misconceptions about orthodontists and their role in helping people achieve and maintain good oral health really are unfounded, and we, in conjunction with the AAO, want to address some of them so that our patients can be as well educated as they can when making decisions about their orthodontic care.

Myth #1 “Anyone who provides braces or aligners is an Orthodontist.”

Many are not! Only an Orthodontist has the training, experience and treatment options to give you your best smile. Don’t be fooled by dentists or the online companies that offer aligners without an orthodontic exam.

Myth #2 “Orthodontists are SO expensive!”

Actually, because every case is different and requires different levels of care, orthodontic treatment costs vary greatly. Many providers offer complimentary consultations and flexible payment options to their patients. Cheaper treatment could cause greater cost down the road to fix what wasn’t done right.

Myth #3 “Office visits are not necessary to get straight teeth.”

Office visits are extremely important during treatment to make sure your teeth are getting the proper care.

Myth #4 “Orthodontic treatment takes years.”

Just like every case is different, every treatment time is different. Your provider will give you the best estimate of treatment time after your initial consultation.

Myth #5 “Orthodontic treatment is only cosmetic.”

In reality, orthodontic treatment is supposed to align your bite. If your bite is right, your teeth will work better and look better.

Myth #6 “Orthodontists only offer braces.”

Orthodontists are trained to understand and practice many different treatment options. The orthodontist you choose will recommend the treatment option that is best for you and your unique situation. You may be surprised what your orthodontist recommends!

Myth #7 “Orthodontic treatment is just for kids.”
Anyone can benefit from orthodontic treatment. Teens and adults are often patients at our office and benefit from our treatment options. A healthy smile is important for any age!
